Apple Pie

Of course we had to make apple pie for dessert. That is so american...am I right? We just used the Betty Crocker Apple Pie recipe with ganny smith apples, but they were too tart. It wasn't quite right. I don't know, I wasn't great, but I managed to forced it down with some ice cream.

I agree with you ... I don't know why bakers swear by granny smith apples. I think they are too tart as well ... and I don't get it. I rarely use granny smith when I am baking apple desserts. If someone knows the secret why recipes always call for granny smith, do tell! Just curious.

Darn it, I was going to do philly cheese steak and apple pie. I think the reason granny smiths are prefered is partly due to their tartnest (so you can add sugar to the pie) but mainly because they hold up their shape and texture while baking.
